Tanya Moiseiwitsch

(1914-2003), Theatre designer

Tatiana Benita ('Tanya') Moiseiwitsch

Sitter in 2 portraits
Moiseiwitsch made her professional debut as a theatre designer in 1934 at the Westminster Theatre. In 1944, she joined director Tyrone Guthrie at the Liverpool Playhouse, marking the beginning of a productive, collaborative relationship. She created uncluttered, wooden stages that focused attention on the actors' movements with essential props and plush costumes, as in Guthrie's Henry VIII at the Memorial Theatre, Stratford upon Avon (1950). Their open, thrust stages revolutionised the way audiences interacted with the stage, as at the Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario (1953).
