Caroline Barbour-James
(1873-1917), Wife of John Alexander Barbour-JamesSitter in 1 portrait
Born in Georgetown, Guyana, she was married to John Alexander Barbour-James, a colonial post office official. When he was posted to West Africa and his request to have his family relocated to be with him was rejected by his employers, he sent Caroline and the children to England. Caroline was settled in Acton, West London by 1905 and was already the devoted mother to 5 children. Her husband's visits in his holidays bore the couple 3 more children. The family assimilated well into Edwardian life, the children attended fee-paying schools and were well educated and well spoken. The family held Christian values and attended church, singing in the choir. Caroline died in 1917, aged 44.
