Cumberbatch studied drama at Manchester University and the London Academy of Music and Drama. He came to prominence portraying Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama Hawking (2004). Other notable roles include Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock (2010) and David Scott-Fowler in Terence Rattigan's After the Dance (2010) at the National Theatre. In February 2011, Cumberbatch returned to perform in a new adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein directed by Danny Boyle. His films include 12 Years a Slave (2013) and The Imitation Game (2014).
