Norman Rosenthal has been Exhibitions Secretary at the Royal Academy of Arts since 1977 and is credited with reinventing the institution with his innovative and ambitious exhibition programme. In the 1980s and early 1990s he was responsible for the influential 'Art in the 20th Century' series, which included major surveys of German (1985), British (1987), Italian (1989) and American (1992) art. More recent exhibitions have included Africa: Art of a Continent (1995), Sensation (1997) and Apocalypse (2000).
