Born in St Helens, Lancashire, Vegas first won plaudits for his appearance at the 1997 Edinburgh festival. The Johnny Vegas Television Show, aired the following year, presented Vegas as portly and husky voiced, sometimes utilizing pottery skills gained from a degree in ceramics. He made his acting debut in the BBC television series Happiness (2001) and film debut in The Libertine (2004). Other appearances include television sitcom Benidorm (2007-10) the comedy drama Ideal (2005-11) and his exploration of home shopping television channels And Another Thing… , staged at the Manchester Festival (2011).
