John Bernard Adie Barton

(1928-), Stage director

Theatrical director and co-founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Whilst at Cambridge Barton acted and directed in many of the productions staged by the Marlowe Society and created a twelve-part series for BBC radio on the Medieval Mysteries. In 1960 Barton and Peter Hall set up the Royal Shakespeare Company where Barton was a director on over fifty productions. In 1984 London Weekend Television aired recordings of nine workshop sessions led by Barton; these became the basis for his popular book, Playing Shakespeare.
