He joined the 1935 reconnaissance expedition to Everest. While at Marlborough College, he inspired with his enthusiasm 3 of the 1952 Everest team: John Hunt, Charles Wylie and Michael Ward. At Marlborough he founded a climbing club, a National History society, a printing press and a scout troop. As Mayor he discovered in Marlborough Town Hall a collection of valuable 17th century books known as the Vicar's Library, which is now in the Bodleian.

EGH Kempson was educated at Marlborough College (1916-1921) and subsequently taught maths at Marlborough from 1925 to 1967.
He died on 25 May 1987.
