Lanoe (Lance) George Hawker
(1890-1916), RFC Major; recipient of the Victoria CrossSitter in 1 portrait
In August 1914, Hawker joined the Royal Flying Corps's Central Flying School and later No. 6 Squadron. He was the third pilot to receive the Victoria Cross, which he was awarded for bringing down three German aircraft near Ypres in July 1915. On 23 November 1916, Hawker was killed in a dogfight with the German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, 'The Red Baron'. He was aged twenty-five.
