Meyer Fortes
(1906-1983), AnthropologistSitter in 1 portrait
Born in South Africa, Fortes came to England to study psychology at the London School of Economics. During his studies he worked with Emanuel Miller at the first child guidance clinic in the East End of London. Much of Fortes's research was carried out though fieldwork; his travels took him to the Gold Coast, Nigeria and Ghana. After two years as head of the sociological department in the West African Institute, Accra he returned to England. In 1950 he took the post of Professor of Social Anthropology at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement in 1973.
