One of the first and finest of the volunteer American pilots who formed 71 Eagle Squadron at the start of WW2. Towards the end of 1941, 71 Squadron shot down more enemy planes than any other RAF sqadron two months running.

The book I mentioned in previous message was actually called WAR EAGLES, by James Saxon Childers (pub. 1943). He was 71's Intelligence Officer. Lovely book, lovely story. Those charming American boys were invited to tea at Windsor Castle. That may not be in the book.
