William Proctor Remington

(1879-1963), Bishop of Eastern Oregon and long jumper; Olympian

Before studying for the priesthood, Remington was a school teacher and a track and field athlete. In 1900 he competed at the Summer Olympics in Paris, where he came fourth in the long jump and competed in the hurdles. After serving as a rector in Minnesota, he served as a chaplain of a base hospital during World War One. In 1918 he was elected Assistant Bishop of South Dakota, a position he held until 1922, when he was appointed Bishop of Eastern Oregon. Between 1945 and 1951 he served as Assistant Bishop of Pennsylvania and, on retirement, he became a vicar in Claremont, California.
