I believe he was on an interview board at Dartmouth when I was being selected for Officer Training in 1964.
On the interview he asked me which branch I hoped to serve in - I answered Supply & Secretariat, knowing
that with my short-sightedness it was the only place I could go. When he asked "Why?" I said that I thought
it was the easiest department to get into.
He replied : "I am S & S."
"Oops!" I said to the laughter of the members of the panel.
I suspect that this same man, as a Captain in the 1950's, may have had a role in recruitment, and responded
to my boyhood enquiries from 1956?

This is a picture of my father and brother. My grandfather was also in the navy but was killed in world war 1 in france. Daddy joined the navy at 14 and was sent on the arctic convoys. He was badly shell shocked but went on to become rear admiral and commander of the bath
My brother was a gentle and lovely man just like his father but died of cancer
