Dame Valerie Beral

(1946-2022), Epidemiologist

As Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Oxford and principle investigator for the Million Women Study, Beral examined how lifestyle and reproductive factors affected women’s health. Beral worked for 20 years at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in the Department of Epidemiology and in 1988 became the Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit in Oxford, focusing on breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer. She helped to identify a number of causes of cancer and was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2010.
