Richard Hooker Wilmer
(1816-1900), Bishop of AlabamaSitter in 3 portraits
After Britain lost the American War of Independence in 1783, the newly formed American Episcopal Church broke from the Church of England. Richard Wilmer was a fierce advocate of the independence of the Church from the State, and vocally supported the Southern states' claims for confederacy. Once civil war broke out he briefly served as a captain, but returned to the Church to urge men to take up arms. In 1861 Wilmer was elected Bishop of Alabama; the only bishop to be elected while the Confederacy existed, and therefore, also the only Bishop to serve the 'Confederate States of America.'
