Commanded 8 Indian Division in Italy in World War Two. Known as Pasha - as a nickname as fluent Pashtun speaker. My father, Major Polglase, worked for him in Divisional HQ and 17 Brigade. The Indian soldiers and Gurkhas endured Savage fighting side by side British soldiers with mutual respect. It must have been so difficult for all the soldiers so far from home fighting a determined and brutal enemy in well established defensive positions week after week month after month.
