Peter Pelham
(1695?-1751), Mezzotint engraver and painter in AmericaArtist associated with 33 portraits
Peter Pelham was apprenticed in 1713 to the mezzotint engraver John Simon. He found employment producing mezzotints for various printsellers, primarily Edward Cooper. In 1727, he emigrated with his family to America, settling in Boston. He continued to work as an engraver, but also opened a school where he taught a variety of subjects including dancing and arithmetic. Through his third marriage, to the widow Mary Singleton, Pelham was stepfather to her son, the artist John Singleton Copley.
