Polly Borland

(1959-), Photographer

Artist of 72 portraits
Born in Melbourne, Polly Borland has lived in the UK since 1989 and has established an international reputation for her work in both portraiture and reportage. She shoots regularly for numerous UK and US publications including the New Yorker, the New York Times, the Independentand Dazed and Confused. She says that, 'the best portraiture is when you get beneath the skin of someone, it's psychologically revealing. You penetrate below the surface.' Borland won the 1994 John Kobal Photography Portrait Award. In 2000 the National Portrait Gallery commissioned Borland to take a series of photographs, Australians, for an exhibition to celebrate that country's 200th anniversary.
