British-born of Jamaican heritage, Modahl is a former middle distance running athlete specialising in 800m races. She is a six times British champion, winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games (1990). Cleared of a performance-enhancing drug charge, she returned to run a personal best in the 1000m in Nice in the summer of 1999. Modahl competed in four Olympic Games between 1988 and 2000. She has since carved out a successful broadcasting career and was one of the BBC team covering the 2002 Commonwealth Games in her home town of Manchester. She set up the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation which gives young marginalised people an opportunity to maximise and develop their ambitions and potential. In 2018 she was awarded an MBE for services to sport and to young people.
