Born in Leeds, Adams is Great Britain's most successful female boxer. She won gold at the 2012 London Olympics, becoming the first British boxer to successfully defend the Olympic title for 92 years, beating three time world champion Ren Cancan. She is the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title. She became World Amateur Champion (May 2016) securing a grand slam of titles, she is the only female boxer in the history of the sport to have won every major title: Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth. Adams was awarded a MBE (2013) and an OBE (2016) for her services to boxing. Adams is openly bi-sexual, she topped the list of The Independent's 101 most influential LGBT people in Britain for 2012
