My great-grandfather, Henry Harvey, was Batman to Lord Merriman during the first World War. They served in the Manchester regiment in France together and kept in touch for many years afterwards. They used to meet in Manchester for tea. Lord Merriman gave Henry a silver cigarette case with the inscription "To my friend, Pte No. 20034 Henry Harvey from F.B.Merriman, France 1915-1919".
Lady Merriman used to send their children's outgrown clothes for Henry's children - my maternal grandmother Elizabeth and her brother, Frank Boyd Harvey, named after Lord Merriman. My mother, Elizabeth's daughter still has the cigarette case.
