William Dalziel Mackenzie was born at 5am on 31st March 1840 in East Bank, Renfrewshire, the eldest son and first child of the Edward Mackenzie (1811-1880) and Mary Dalziel (1820-1861).
He was educated in Boulogne in 1849, and at William Fisher’s school, Gt George Street, Liverpool, in 1851, before going on to Harrow 1855-1857 & Magdalen College, Oxford 1858-1862, gaining an MA in1865. He was a law student at the Inner Temple 1859-1863 and was called to Bar on 17 Nov 1863.
Marrid (1) 1863 Mary Anna Baskerville (6 May 1841-15 Nov 1900), daughter of Henry & Mary Anna Baskerville of Crowsley Park, Shiplake. (2) 24 June 1902 Mary Catherine Stapleton (17 Oct 1849-22 Apr 1924), daughter of Adam Stewart Gladstone & Caroline Walker & widow of Sir Francis George Stapleton.
In 1873 he was appointed High Sheriff of Oxfordshire.
In 1874 he stood as Conservative candidate for Reading, losing by 131 votes. He wrote 2 papers, ‘The Depression in Agriculture’ & ‘The Revival of British Industry’. Bred & exhibited Highland cattle & Western Isles ponies.
From 1880, on his father’s death he became Lord of Manors of Fawley, Santon, Sibton in Croxton & Thetford cum Halwick and patron of 3 livings.
1899 President of Thames Riparian Owners’ Association.
1926 Mentioned in Charter of Incorporation of Reading University. Life member of University Court.
