Dame Parveen June Kumar

Born in Lahore, pre-partition India, Kumar qualified in medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, London before training as a Gastroenterologist. In 1989 she changed the face of medical publishing co-authoring Kumar and Clarke's Clinical Medicine, which due to its accessibility, has resulted in it being the world's leading medical textbook. In 1999 Kumar won the first Asian Woman of the Year Award and the following year was awarded a CBE for services to medicine. In 2006 she was made President of the British Medical Association, and in 2008 received their gold medal for services to medicine and education.
