Iranian-born Haleh Afshar is British Emeritus Professor of Politics and Women's Studies at the University of York, she serves as a cross bench peer in the House of Lords and is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. She is a prominent Muslim feminist who characterises herself as a Socialist and a Shia muslim. She first moved to Britain at the age of 14 to attend boarding school, despite not knowing how to speak English at the time. She attended university in the UK before returning to Iran where she worked as a civil servant and as a journalist. She has written extensively on Iran and Iranian politics. She served as Deputy Chair of the British Council's Gender and Development Task Force. She was awarded an OBE in the 2005 for services to equal opportunities and was made a baroness two years later.
