Bainbrigg Buckeridge
(1668-1733), Poet, painter and first historian of British artLater Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter in 1 portrait
A poet, painter and friend of artists and writers, Buckeridge was also the author of An Essay towards an English-School of Painters, the earliest history of English painting. First published in 1706, it takes the form of a series of artistic biographies appended to Roger de Piles's The Art of Painting and the Lives of the Painters. It remains a key art-historical source. Buckeridge himself was a landscape and topographical artist, but none of his paintings are now known.
