Writer and scholar; author of critical, political and historical works as well as plays, novels and short stories. Steiner has held chairs of comparative literature at Geneva and Oxford and is a founding fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. His books, translated into 12 languages, include The Death of Tragedy (1961), Language and Silence (1967), In Bluebeard's Castle (1971), Real Presences (1989) and Errata: An examined life (1998).
