James Whitall lived both in the USA and London, UK. He was born to Margaret Haines Bacon Whitall1861-1931 and John Mickle Whitall 1858-1926 on 8 April 1888 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married Mildred Mason Smith 1888-1973 at the Germantown Friends Meeting House, Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 26 September 1911. He died in Havre de Grace, Harford County, Maryland on 24 Mar 1954.

James was an author and translator. According to his obituary in the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore, Maryland, 25 Mar 1954, Thursday, Page 28, "A native of Philadelphia and graduate of Haverford College, Mr. Whitall spent fourteen years in London, where through association with literary publications he became friends with such authors as Virginia Woolf, George Moore and his cousin, Logan Pearsall Smith. On returning to America, these literary contacts, together with an intimate acquaintance with the musical and theatrical element in London became the subject of an autobiography entitled, 'English Years.'"
