Sitter in 5 portraits
Artist of 1 portrait
British-born artist Ofili studied at Chelsea School of Art and Royal College of Art. His art was included in Whitworth Young Contemporaries and NPG's BP Portrait Award and represented in the Royal Academy's Sensation exhibition (1997). Ofili won the Turner prize in 1998 and went on to win a British Council Travel Scholarship to Zimbabwe which led to his use of elephant dung, which supports and adds texture to his paintings. He employs collage, resin, glitter and multiple layers of paint to create images that often refer to his Nigerian heritage and black experience. His works often takes racial and sexual stereotypes as their subject matter and comment on ugliness, conventional beauty and identity with diverse references to popular culture and African art.
