Verity Bargate
(1940-1981), Novelist and theatre director; Founder of the Soho TheatreSitter in 1 portrait
In 1969 Bargate established the Soho Theatre on Old Compton Street with her husband, Frederick Proud, with a policy of offering little-known works for low ticket prices. From 1975 she became the sole artistic director, promoting numerous careers. Encouraged to write by her second partner Barrie Keeffe, Bargate's uptake of writing coincided with the diagnosis of cancer.
