Bobby Moore

(1941-1993), Footballer

Sitter in 11 portraits
In July 1966, the England football team won their first and only World Cup victory. The iconic image of captain, Bobby Moore, lifting the Jules Rimet trophy cemented Moore as the poster boy of a golden period in English football. Moore joined West Ham as a groundstaff boy and played his debut against Manchester United in September 1958. He dedicated many hours to training, and in 1962 was named captain, the twenty-one year old leader of a dynamic young team. Considered one of the sport's best defenders, Moore was a composed and commanding captain with immaculate timing. Known for his intelligence and sportsmanship on the pitch, he was also widely regarded as a great gentleman of the game.
