Born in Norfolk, Colman trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and has gone on to work extensively in film, television and theatre. Feature film appearances include Cuban Fury (2014), The Iron Lady (2011) and Paddy Considine's directorial debut, Tyrannosaur (2011), for which she won a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. She won two BAFTA awards in 2013, for her performances in Accused and in the comedy Twenty Twelve. Colman won the 2014 BAFTA for Best Actress for the crime drama Broadchurch. She is also known for her regular roles in Peep Show (2003-15), Green Wing (2004-6) and Rev (2010-14). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Queen Anne in The Favourite (2018), and has received further nominations for The Father (2020) and The Lost Daughter (2021).
