This is my great-grandfather who played a largely unsung but positive role in the development of Anglo-American relations after the Civil War. He was central to the first international arbitration which settled the Alabama Claims and in the treaty negotiation that settled the Newfoundland Fisheries dispute. He took the view that America was a key emerging power and likely of great importance to Britain in its foreign relations.
