(Muhammed) Tewfik Pasha
(1852-1892), Khedive of Egypt and SudanSitter in 1 portrait
Born on November 15, Tewfiq was the eldest son of Khedive Ismail and Princess Shafiq-Nur. He was raised and educated in Egypt, unlike his younger brothers who were sent to Europe to be educated. His father successfully altered the traditional order of succession to the Khedivate of Egypt where previously it would have passed on to the eldest living male relative, it now passed on from father to son. Tewfik therefore became heir-apparent. He married Emina Ilhamy in 1873, with whom he had a successful marriage and several children. Tewfiq developed a reputation for being kind, fair and humble. He died on 7 January 1892, at the Helwan Palace near Cairo, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Abbas II.
