Han-ye-tu Was-te ('Beautiful Night')

, Sioux Indian

Sitter in 1 portrait
Han-ye-tu- Was-te ('Beautiful Night') was a Dakota beauty from the Sioux American Indian tribe. She was the wife of Cheif Wa-pa-sha ('The Standard', or 'Red Leaf'), a Mdewakanton (Dakota Sioux) also known as Joseph Wapasha. In 1851 and 1852 Han-ye-tu Was-te's husband signed treaties that surrendered the southern half of what is now the state of Minnesota to the United States. The land sales were to instigate the removal of his band of people to the reservation on the Minnesota River, then removal from Minnesota to Crow Creek Reservation in Dakota Territory, then lastly to the Santee Reservation in Nebraska, where Han-ye-tu and the last chief Wabasha spent their last days.
