Walker Evans is considered the leading American documentary photographer of the twentieth century. His interest in photography began at the Sorbonne in Paris and by 1928 he had started work as a freelance photographer. From the 1930s onwards Evans exhibited regularly, living in Greenwich village with the painter and photographer Ben Shahn. Evans was one of the first staff photographers employed by Roy Stryker in 1935 for what was to become the Farm Security Administration (FSA). He was associate editor and photographer for Fortune magazine (1945-65), which, partly through his influence, gained a reputation for social conscience.
