SIR PETER BENSON MAXWELL, CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE STRAITS SETTLEMENTS (1867-1871)
The Judicial Duties Act of 1867 brought about several changes to Singapore’s judicial system. The Governor of the Straits Settlements ceased to be a Judge of the Court of Judicature. According to the Act, the ‘Recorder of Singapore’ became the ‘Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements’. Sir Peter Benson Maxwell (1816-1893), then the Recorder of Singapore, was appointed the first Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements in 1867 and served until 1871.
