Ellen Eliza Blight (Bright)(1833 or 1834-1850), Lion tamer
Sitter in 1 portrait
Ellen Blight, a lion tamer, became the 'Lion Queen' at George Wombwell's Menagerie in 1849 and performed for Queen Victoria. She was killed by a tiger in 1850 at the age of around seventeen. Her death was widely reported and she became a posthumous celebrity, which nonetheless led to the banning of female lion tamers.
