Ashia Hansen

(1972-), Triple jumper; Olympian

Sitter in 1 portrait
One of Britain's top female athletes. Born in the United States, she was adopted by a Ghanian politics lecturer who worked for the United Nations, and his wife, an English University lecturer. Hansen lived her first eight years in Ghana before the family settled in London. She has spoken out about the racism she experienced at junior school in East London. Hansen took up the triple jump in 1992 and went on to hold the World Indoor Triple Jump record (her personal best is 15.16 metres). She retained her Commonwealth title in the 2002 Games and took the Gold Medal in The European Championships in Munich. She retired in 2008 and can be seen regularly on television and in sports and lifestyle magazines. She was made an MBE in 2003's New Year Honours.
