Hewitt was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and Minister for Women (June 2001-May 2005) and had previously been Minister for Small Business and e-commerce. The Australian-born Cambridge graduate was PR officer for Age Concern (1971-3) and General Secretary, National Council for Civil Liberties (1974-83).
