Born in Sri Lanka where he spent his early years, Gunesekera lived briefly in the Philippines before settling in Britain. He published a collection of stories, Monkfish Moon (1992) for which he was shortlisted for several prizes, the book was named a New York Times Notable Book for 1993. His first novel, Reef (1994) was widely acclaimed and short-listed as a finalist for the Booker Prize, as well as for the Guardian Fiction Prize. In the USA he was nominated for a New Voice Award. He has subsequently published four other novels. His most recent book, Noontide Toll, was published in 2014.
