American ballet dancer Eric Underwood is a former Soloist of the Royal Ballet. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Underwood came across a ballet class aged fourteen and recognised 'a ticket to change my circumstances' and escape from a childhood surrounded by gun crime. He went on to win a scholarship to the School of American Ballet in New York and graduated to the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 2000. He joined the Royal Ballet Company in 2006 and was promoted to Soloist in 2008.
