Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Born in Peckham, London to a mother from Antigua and a father from Saint Lucia, Jean-Baptiste studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. She gained international notoriety in Mike Leigh's social drama Secrets and Lies (1966) in which she played the role of Hortense Cumberbatch. For this performance she was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first black British actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, and the second black Briton to be nominated, succeeding Jaye Davidson. More recently she starred as Sharon Bishop QC in the acclaimed ITV crime series Broadchurch (2015).
