The Lady's Monthly Museum

(1798-1832), Lady's magazine

Artist associated with 12 portraits
The Lady's Monthly Museum or Polite Repository of Amusement and Instruction (London) was a popular monthly women's magazine billed, at 7 x 5 inches, as 'a convenient size for the pocket'. As well as featuring biographies, essays, poems, serialised stories and domestic duties, it included a 'Cabinet of Fashion' with coloured engravings, renamed 'The Mirror of Fashion' with more information from April 1812. The quality of its prints varied: though poor to begin with, they soon improved before deteriorating again in its last years, and were often closely based on the previous month's plates from more expensive magazines such as Ackermann's Repository of Arts and La Belle Assemblée. In 1832 it merged with The Lady's Magazine to become The Lady's Magazine and Museum of the Belles Lettres which continued until 1837 when it merged with The Court Magazine and Belle Assemblée to become The Court Magazine and Monthly Critic and Lady's Magazine, and Museum of the Belles Lettres, music, fine arts, drama, fashions, &c. (1838-1847)
