Edward Enninful

(1972-), Editor of British Vogue

Sitter in 2 portraits
Enninful's family emigrated from Ghana when he was young. His mother, a seamstress, inspired his early interest in fashion, creating clothes made from African fabrics. He worked briefly as a model in his teens, before becoming an assistant stylist at i-D magazine. Aged eighteen, he was appointed their fashion director, the youngest ever for an international magazine, and became known for styling influenced by British street style. In 1998, he was made a contributing editor to Italian Vogue, where he pioneered the 'Black Issue' (July 2008), featuring only black models. He was awarded an OBE for his services to diversity in the fashion industry and, in April 2017, became the new Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue, its first black and male editor. He has used this position to address the widespread lack of diversity in the fashion industry.
