Les Ferdinand

(1966-), Footballer

Sitter in 2 portraits
Les Ferdinand joined Queens Park Rangers Football Club (QPR) as a player in 1987, aged twenty. During the 1992-3 FA Premier League season he proved to be a star striker, scoring twenty goals in thirty-seven games. This was followed by moves to Newcastle United Football Club in 1995 (where he scored twenty-nine goals in his first season), Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in 1997 and West Ham Football Club in 2003. Ferdinand was part of the England squad for the 1996 UEFA European Championship and the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Ferdinand retired from football in 2006 just before his fortieth birthday and, in 2015, returned to QPR as Director of Football. At his instigation, the club staged a charity match, #Game4Grenfell, that raised £450,000 for the Grenfell Tower disaster fund in September 2017 (Ferdinand grew up on the same west London estate). Ferdinand and QPR have continued to support the surviving community, providing football training for children and funding psychological support for victims of the tragedy. Ferdinand was awarded an MBE in 2005, although he is already commonly known to his fans as ‘Sir Les’.
