Born to Jamaican parents, Beverley Knight is a British singer, radio presenter and musical theatre actress who gained fame in the 1990s as one of Britain's greatest soul singers. Her debut album, The B-Funk, was released in 1995. Heavily influenced by American soul singers such as Aretha Franklin, she reached the top twenty in the British singles charts with her hits Greatest Day (1999), Get Up! (2001) and Shoulda Woulda Coulda (2002). She has released a platinum-selling greatest hits album (2006), sang at the London Paralympics Opening Ceremony (2012) and is the winner of three MOBO awards. In 2013, she moved into musical theatre, taking over the lead role in The Bodyguard. She is an ambassador and campaigner for charities including Christian Aid, Stop AIDS and The Terrence Higgins Trust, for which she was recognised when she was awarded her MBE in 2006. In 2017, she formed a musical theatre super group with singers Cassidy Janson and Amber Riley called Leading Ladies. They released their debut album, Songs from the Stage, in the same year.
