Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

(1797-1839), French magazine

Artist associated with 12 portraits
Le Journal des Dames et des Modes (Paris) was an early French fashion magazine founded, edited and published by philosopher, author and journalist Pierre de la Mésangère until his death in 1831. It was published every 5 days with at least one, and from 1798, two plates headed 'Costumes Parisiens' to keep abreast of the now rapid changes in fashion. It had a large circulation in Paris and the provinces, and was also the primary source of French fashions in England at the time: many of its plates appeared in Townsend's Quarterly Selection of Parisian Costumes (London, 1823-1824) and Townsend's Monthly Selection of Parisian Costumes (1825-1888) which published the first French plates in Britain, and they were also copied for other magazines.
