This is a portrait of my aunt, Mary Hope Allen (1898 – 2001). She was educated at Downe House and The Slade, worked for a short time on The Weekly Westminster, joined the BBC in 1927, retiring in 1958, where she did original and pioneering work in the Drama Department. Her papers are deposited in the Manuscripts Department of Cambridge University and the BBC Archives. There are other photographic portraits of her by Vivienne and Radio Times, and a lost oil painting by Mary Potter, partially reproduced in Julian Potter's Mary Potter: a life of painting, Scolar Press 1998.
