Doris (Dod) Procter (nee Shaw) grew up in Devon and Cornwall. She studied art at the Stanhope Forbes art school in Newlyn in 1907 and at the Atelier Colarossi in Paris in 1910-11, where she met the artist Ernest Procter. The couple were married in 1912. In the 1920s she began to concentrate on portraiture; her best-known painting from this period is Morning (1927) a work which caused a tremendous stir at the Royal Academy exhibition of that year. It was bought for the nation by the Daily Mail newspaper amidst much publicity, making Procter the most talked about living artist in Britain.
