Social activist and charity worker. Hobhouse spent her early career in the United States and Mexico, but returned to London in 1898 to contribute to the struggle for women's emancipation. A critic of British Policy during the Second Boer War (1899-1902), Hobhouse's reports from South Africa helped to improve conditions in British prisoner of war camps.
