(1862-1934), Photographer

Henry Walter ('H. Walter') Barnett

Sitter in 2 portraits
Artist associated with 576 portraits
Australian-born Barnett opened his first studio in Hobart, Tasmania. He subsequently travelled widely to gain more experience, working in the studios of Taber in San Francisco and Downey in London before establishing a reputation with his Melbourne studio. He moved to London in 1897 and opened a studio in Knightsbridge the following year. A member of the Linked Ring photo-secessionist group from 1899 to 1901 with the pseudonym 'The Antipodean', he managed to combine art and commercial portraiture with his exquisitely produced sepia platinum portraits on flexible vellum mounts. He was co-founder of the Professional Photographers Association in 1901. In 1920 Barnett moved to Dieppe and opened a studio there.
